Weekly Reflection -Fifth Week (FIRST PHASE)
Date: August 11 – August 16, 2025
“Teaching is not about filling a pot but lighting a lamp that continues to glow.”
The fifth week of my teaching practice at Government HSS Anchalummood was filled with meaningful activities and new beginnings. I successfully completed the remaining activities of Little Things Matter by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and started the poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers by Emily Dickinson.
On Monday, August 11th, I continued with the pending activities of Little Things Matter. The students wrote a diary entry as Kalam, describing an evening by the sea, and also worked on if-clause sentences. They were enthusiastic and creative.
On Tuesday, August 12th, I carried out the third section of activities. The first task was to list sentences beginning with question words and auxiliary verbs, and the second was to frame WH-questions for the underlined parts in given sentences. The students actively participated. On this day, Anamika Ma’am observed Alina and Aishwarya, who were also part of the teaching practice at Anchalummood.
On Wednesday, August 13th, I completed the last two activities of the chapter—question tags and greetings. The class was lively and interactive, as the greetings activity gave students a chance to practice communication skills in a fun way.
On Thursday, August 14th, I began teaching the poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers using ICT aids. I explained the first two stanzas, focusing on the imagery of hope as a bird that never stops singing. The class was observed by Anamika Ma’am, whose feedback motivated me.
Finally, on Saturday, August 16th, I completed the remaining stanzas of the poem, highlighting how hope is strongest in difficulties and asks for nothing in return. The students responded with thoughtful reflections.
This week was significant as I could balance prose activities with the transition into poetry. The blend of traditional activities and ICT support helped me understand how to sustain student interest. Each day, I feel my growth as a teacher deepening through these experiences.
