Workshop on the Art of Teaching Communicative English

On August 2 , 2024  FMTC Mylapore hosted an insightful workshop titled The Art of Teaching Communicative English, conducted by Mr. Joseph Varghese, an expert in communicative English with a master’s degree and extensive teaching experience. The workshop was specifically designed to enhance the teaching techniques of aspiring educators, with a focus on effective communication skills in the classroom.

Joseph Varghese shared a meticulously developed methodology for teaching communicative English. He emphasized practical strategies that help teachers engage students more effectively, making the learning of English both interactive and immersive. His approach included breaking down complex linguistic structures into simple, relatable concepts that can be easily grasped by students of varying proficiency levels.

Throughout the workshop, Mr. Varghese provided actionable tips on how to foster confidence in students, enabling them to communicate in English with ease. His techniques highlighted the importance of active participation, role-playing, and real-life scenarios to strengthen students’ conversational skills. The session was both informative and highly interactive, with teachers actively participating in demonstrations and discussions.

WEEKLY REFLECTION SIXTH WEEK (FIRST PHASE)

The past week of my teaching practice (Days 21–25) was both engaging and rewarding. On Day 21, after the Onam vacation, I taught Articles through the Concept Attainment Model, where students actively discovered rules through examples and non-examples. The following days (22–25) were dedicated to the inspiring chapter The Day My World Changed by Malala Yousafzai, taught using ICT. Each day, I carried the chapter forward step by step, making use of PowerPoint slides, visuals, and activity cards to bring Malala’s story to life. Students were highly motivated, sharing their thoughts on education and courage, which made the lessons more meaningful. I also had varied experiences beyond the classroom, like serving the midday meal, handling substitution hours, and managing double-period sessions.
